In Loving Memory
My Biggest Sorrow
A tribute to the one who left too soon

Aparajita Misra
21 December, 1988 – 16 November, 2009
As a human being, Aparajita Misra — affectionately called Mitu — was a very kind and loving person. She was so easy-minded that anybody could win her trust very easily. Above all, she possessed all the good characteristics that one good girl should have. The quality I admire the most is her caring nature towards everyone. She was one of the greatest gifts of God, as I realised — too late — when the Almighty took her away.
Though she is no longer with us, her memories remain alive within us always. She was my only and loveliest sister, and we both loved each other dearly. I deeply regret that I could not openly express my love and affection towards her while she was alive. She loved me more, understood me more, and was ready to sacrifice more than I could probably ever afford for her.
As a sister, she played a very vital role in my life. She was my strength — wherever I needed mental support, she built my confidence and encouraged me to go for it. She was just three years younger than I, and I shared all my sorrows, happy moments, and other experiences with her, just as one would with a true best friend. So she was my friend as well, and I not only lost a very good sister — I also lost my best friend.
Her Voice — Her Legacy
Mitu was a very good singer, and she proved it right from her childhood. She was uniquely a versatile singer — there is no doubt about it. She sang Assamese, Bengali, and Hindi songs with excellent rendition. She participated in many competitions and earned more than fifty prizes in her short period of life. There were very few song competitions where she did not achieve a prize.
She could sing Tiwa folk songs as well — a tribal Bihu song that is very difficult to sing, especially for an Assamese girl like Mitu, who had no prior knowledge of the language. Yet she mastered it with remarkable ease and grace.
- Selected for the Inter-College Youth Festival from Guwahati College, conducted by members of Gauhati University — where she won the first prize in tribal song.
- Declared the Best Singer in School and held that position in all the succeeding years of her school days.
- Declared the Best Singer at Morigaon College as well as Guwahati College.
- Invited to join as a teacher at Morigaon Music School — though unfortunately she could not continue due to the family's transfer from Jagiroad to Guwahati in 2008.
- Recognised as a Radio Artist of All India Radio (AIR), Guwahati — invited to sing many songs on radio.
- Appeared in two television programmes sequenced and telecast by Doordarshan Kendra Gauhati.
- Was receiving a National Scholarship from the Central Government of India for Borgeet.
- Completed a Visharad (Degree in Classical Music) and was preparing for Nipun (Master's Degree in Music).
- Was studying B.A. Part II and earned recognition at Guwahati College, Morigaon College, and Jagiroad Higher Secondary School through her unique talent in music.
She achieved all of this only at the age of twenty, and would undoubtedly have earned great progress and success in life had she been alive.
My mother stood behind her musical journey in every sphere — like a true guide and admirer. Mitu had many plans for her music. She could have done so much more, and the world would have been richer for it.
"I love my sister very much. It is too painful to admit that I lost her. I often feel nostalgic about her."
— Abhijit Kumar Misra
